Bunions Q & A

What are bunions?

A bunion is a swollen bump on the outer edge of your big toe. It forms when the bones at the front of your foot become misaligned due to pressure on the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint.

Anyone can experience a bunion, but several factors may increase your risk. These include friction from how you walk (foot mechanics) and the shape of your foot (foot structure). If you have a bunion, contact Advanced Foot Care and Clinical Research Center.

What are the symptoms of bunions?

The symptoms of bunions include:

  • Difficulty bending your big toe
  • Pain wearing regular shoes
  • Calluses or corns on your big toe
  • Hammertoes

As the bunion grows, you might also experience numbness or swelling in your toe.

When should I see a foot and ankle surgeon about a bunion?

Make an appointment at Advanced Foot Care and Clinical Research Center if you have a swollen bump on the outside edge of your big toe and the pain doesn’t improve with at-home treatment like icing it, wearing different shoes, or taking anti-inflammatory medication.

Also, seek treatment if your bunion pain keeps you from work or other activities you enjoy.

How are bunions diagnosed?

To diagnose a bunion, your Advanced Foot Care and Clinical Research Center provider reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including when they started and if they’re worse during certain activities.

Next, your provider examines your foot and big toe, looking for a swollen bump. They gently press on the bunion and order X-rays to assess the alignment of the bones and joints at the front of your foot.

How are bunions treated?

Treatment of bunions depends on several factors, including your age, the size of the bunion, and its effect on your daily routine. Your Advanced Foot Care and Clinical Research Center provider might recommend:

  • Bunion pads and taping
  • Footwear changes
  • Custom orthotics
  • Pain relievers
  • Physical therapy
  • Corticosteroid injections

If these treatments don’t make a difference, your provider might recommend surgery. Advanced Foot Care and Clinical Research Center offers chevron bunionectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that removes excess bone, improving the alignment of your big toe.
